You will find all the documents necessary for your application to HLTA status on this page. The panel will then recommend the appropriate course of action for you to achieve HLTA status.

To achieve HLTA status, everyone will eventually need to attend preparation for assessment training and then be assessed.

Maths & Science

A new national initiative to further improve Maths and Science learning in Secondary Schools that looks at the role of classroom based support staff and how they could provide high level support to both teachers and students.

In order to achieve this, it is recognised that support staff will need to develop their subject knowledge in Maths or Science and opportunities will be provided for this in the programme. The second part of the programme looks at effective classroom practice, and the HLTA standards will be used as the basis for this element. Support staff who complete the programme will be awarded specialist HLTA status in Maths or Science.

As an authority we have received funding to support this programme during the next academic year and we have spent some time considering how best to use this funding to benefit schools in Sutton. We propose to deliver subject based training using the strategy materials and following this to prepare staff for assessment against the HLTA standards.

The funding is limited, and during the current financial year we will only be able to offer 10 places on the programme. The subject based element of the training will be rigorous, tailored to the needs of Sutton schools, and will take place over 9 days during the Spring Term. We recognise that in the short term this could cause pressure in schools, and we will be offering a bursary per participant for costs such as supply cover. This will be followed by preparation for assessment for HLTA status and the normal arrangements for this will apply. The long term advantage will be that schools gain staff who are able to give more effective support to the delivery of the Maths and Science curriculum.

The programme will be of particular relevance to support staff who will be working on the Maths element in the Study Plus programme. It may also be of interest to:
